Distinguished Leaders Lecture featuring Actress Geena Davis, Founder, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media
Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 4:30 PM (EDT)
About the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media:
Attend a conversation with Academy Award-winning Actor Geena Davis about her work in front of and behind-the-camera September 15 at 4:30 p.m. in Lohrfink Auditorium. Davis will talk with Undergraduate Dean Norean Sharpe about her career and her advocacy efforts through the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media and its programming arm See Jane, which engages film and television creators to increase the percentages of female characters – and reduce gender stereotyping – in media made for children 11 and under.
Six years ago, while watching children's television programs and videos with her young daughter, Davis noticed a remarkable imbalance in the ratio of male to female characters. From that small starting point, Davis went on to raise funds for the largest research project ever undertaken on gender in children's entertainment.
The research showed that in the top-grossing G-rated films, there were three male characters for every one female a statistic that still has not improved. The concern was clear: What message does this send to young children? The institute is the leading resource for gender in media research, trends, and education for the entertainment industry and the public.
